Live animals can be flown to all destinations within New Zealand on most of our flights.
Every year we carry thousands of cats and dogs around New Zealand.
The carriage of live animals by air is regulated by various Government authorities as well as by Air New Zealand and IATA.
Domestic cats and dogs (excluding any transported for profit e.g. racing greyhounds) can travel as checked baggage on domestic services if you are travelling. Please see Travelling With Pets for more information. Unaccompanied domestic pets and all other types of animals can be flown as cargo.
Air New Zealand has robust standards in place around the transportation of animals to ensure the comfort and safety of pets at each stage of their journey. These standards are constantly reviewed by the airline, in accordance with IATA regulations, to ensure your pet is offered the best possible care. If the cage does not meet the requirements your pet will not be accepted to travel.
If your cage does not meet the requirements Air New Zealand National Cargo has suitable cat and dog containers available for sale, however these containers must be pre-booked by contacting the Pet Centre on 0800 737 737, option 1, between the hours of 08:00 - 17:30. A minimum of 72 hours notice is required for cages. Please look at our national cargo pricing for more information.
All flights can sometimes have restricted space due to aircraft size / passenger numbers / perishable cargo / incompatible cargo or other factors. It is highly recommended that you prebook by contacting the Pet Centre. Animal shipments must be prepaid at the time of your booking. Changes and Cancellation fees will apply.
It is a requirement to provide a Government issued photo ID at the time of presenting a shipment for an Air New Zealand flight. This requirement includes animal shipments.
Further information can also be obtained by emailing us at email@example.com.
The Indemnity for Pet Transportation within New Zealand must be completed when shipping your pets/livestock.
